Upmo is looking to appoint a new trustee to join its Board and help support the continued development and growth of the charity.

Upmo is an Edinburgh-based charity providing support and opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and autism. For more than a decade, the charity has combined tailored support services with an increasingly respected curriculum of creative workshops, educational activities and vocational programmes. Upmo currently supports around 170 students across Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian.

At the heart of Upmo’s work is a simple but powerful belief: every person in society should be given the opportunities they need to develop their potential and play an equal, inclusive and rewarding role in their communities.

The charity is looking for enthusiastic, proactive and collaborative individuals who want to make a positive difference. Trustees work with the Board and Chief Executive to provide strategic oversight, good governance and support for the long-term sustainability of the charity.

As a trustee, you will help ensure that Upmo continues to deliver on its mission and remains focused on the needs and aspirations of the people it supports.

Trustees contribute to areas including:

  • Financial oversight
  • Strategic planning
  • Business continuity and risk
  • Charity and regulatory governance
  • Relationships with key external stakeholders
  • Keeping Upmo’s values and purpose central to its work
  • Advocacy, representation and promotion of the charity

Applications are welcome from people from a wide range of backgrounds. Previous trustee experience is not essential, and the Board is keen to hear from people who can bring different perspectives, skills and life experience.

The key qualities Upmo is looking for include good communication skills, strong teamwork, analytical thinking, sound judgement, integrity, and a willingness to take personal responsibility. Most importantly, trustees should share the charity’s commitment to supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism.

Board meetings are held four times per year, with every second meeting held in person in the Edinburgh area. Trustees should also allow time to read papers and prepare for meetings, with the overall commitment usually no more than 2 to 4 hours per month.

Being a trustee can be a highly rewarding experience and offers the opportunity to contribute to the work of a charity with a clear purpose and meaningful impact.
