Board Trustee – Treasurer
The Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland (APSS)
Location: Ideally in-person (monthly meetings near East Fortune), with option to join remotely
Time commitment: Approx. 3-4 hours per month

About APSS
The Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland is a volunteer-led organisation dedicated to restoring and preserving historic aircraft, while inspiring future generations through hands-on engineering and aviation education. Based near East Fortune, we’re perhaps best known for building and flying a full-scale replica of the WW1 Sopwith 1½ Strutter—"Sophie"—a historic moment captured in national and international media.

We’re also the subject of a forthcoming documentary from BAFTA-nominated director Alex McCall, three hour-long episodes following APSS and pilot Ellie Carter, the UK’s youngest licensed female pilot, as she trains to fly Sophie.

STEM and Education
A major part of our mission is promoting STEM subjects to school and college-aged students. By sharing the rich heritage of aviation and engineering, we aim to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation. Our workshops and outreach activities create a unique, hands-on learning environment that connects history with future opportunity.

The Role
We’re looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. This role is critical to ensuring sound financial governance, helping us manage growth, and sustain our innovative and impactful work. The Treasurer will guide the board on financial matters, ensure effective oversight, and contribute to our strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on financial strategy and oversight
  • Review budgets, forecasts, and financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations
  • Report to the board on financial health and risks
  • Support funding applications and financial planning
  • Liaise with external accountants and bookkeepers as required

What We’re Looking For

  • A background in finance, accountancy, or financial oversight
  • Strategic thinking and commitment to good governance
  • Alignment with APSS’s values and enthusiasm for aviation, heritage, or education
  • Availability for monthly trustee meetings (ideally in person, or via video link)
  • Trustee or board experience is welcome but not essential
